The Mustangs had another big challenge on Saturday when they took on Loyola University Chicago at New Mexico State University. The Ramblers outscored the Mustangs in the paint, 44-16, and took the victory handedly, 103-71. This was the Mustangs third straight loss after starting the season 2-0. Loyola improves to 3-2.
The Ramblers led by 22 with 1:38 left in the first half, but junior Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia High School) (Albuquerque, NM) cut the lead to 19 with a bucket from behind the arc. Loyola's Lisa Samplawki tacked on a layup in the winding seconds of the first 20 minutes to send the Ramblers into the locker room with a 21-point lead, 53-32.
The Mustangs traded baskets with Loyola for much of the second half; however, WNMU could never shave off the deficit that was created in the first half of play.
For the fifth straight game, Audra Major (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) (Socorro, NM) led the Mustangs in scoring with 18. She sank seven of her 11 shots and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. She also ripped down eight rebounds.
Sarah Wenze (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia High School) (Albuquerque, NM) also finished with eight rebounds and handed out four assists and recorded five points. Vigil and Brandi Harris (Goodyear, AZ) added 11 points.
The Mustangs outmatched their opponents on the free throw line for the fourth time this season. The Mustangs shot 77.3 percent from the stripe. The Ramblers finished with 66.7 percent.
